Grief’s Garden

A hauntingly beautiful meditation on loss, resilience, and feminine strength. Grief’s Garden is an original 30×40″ framed acrylic painting with sculptural bas-relief elements by Becka LaFleur. A narrative piece where sorrow decays into new life, and grief becomes a force of transformation.

About Grief’s Garden

Grief’s Garden was born in the wake of emotional devastation. Created during a period of deep mourning, this 30×40″ mixed-media work unflinchingly captures the raw, transformative nature of grief, and the quiet, brutal miracle of surviving it.

The protagonist dissolves into the forest, her body nourishing the earth around her. Mushrooms bloom from her decaying form. Vines coil around her heart, sculpted in delicate bas-relief, wrapping tightly before blossoming into a flower on the other side. These sculptural elements rise from the canvas with a tactile presence, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. Grief becomes not just an image, but something you can see, feel, and almost touch: painful, visible, and generative.

Rendered in Becka LaFleur’s saturated, neon-infused palette and surrealist style, Grief’s Garden confronts the myth of fragility assigned to women. From a distinctly feminist perspective, it offers no polished narrative of healing. Instead, it insists that grief can be both a wound and a womb, where loss roots itself deeply and still finds a way to bloom.

She grieves, but she endures. Her body breaks down and becomes sustenance for the forest. In stillness, she transforms.

This is a piece for the collector who has known heartbreak and kept going. For those who understand that growth doesn’t always emerge from light: it can come from rot, from ruin, from the soil of everything we’ve lost.
